Ο Αθανάσιος Κανάτας έλαβε το Δίπλωμα Ηλεκτρολόγου Μηχανικού από τη Σχολή ΗΜΜΗ/Υ του ΕΜΠ το 1991, το M.Sc. in Satellite Communication Engineering από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Surrey (UK) το 1992, και το Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα Ηλεκτρολόγου Μηχανικού από τη Σχολή ΗΜΜΗ/Υ του ΕΜΠ το 1997. Από το 1993 ως το 1994 εργάστηκε ως Ηλεκτρολόγος Μηχανικός στο Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών. Το 1995 εργάστηκε ως τεχνικός διευθυντής έργου στην εταιρεία SPACETEC Ltd. Από το 1996 ως το 1999 εργάστηκε ως συνεργάτης ερευνητής στο Εργαστήριο Κινητών Ραδιοεπικοινωνιών του ΕΜΠ. Από το 1999 ως το 2002 εργάστηκε ως Ερευνητής Δ’ στο Ερευνητικό Πανεπιστημιακό Ινστιτούτο Συστημάτων Επικοινωνιών και Υπολογιστών (ΕΠΙΣΕΥ) του ΕΜΠ. Το 2000 έγινε μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της εταιρείας OTESAT A.E. Το 2002 εκλέχθηκε Επίκουρος Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Ψηφιακών Συστημάτων του Πανεπιστημίου Πειραιώς όπου και εργάζεται ως Καθηγητής. Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα περιλαμβάνουν ανάπτυξη νέων ψηφιακών τεχνικών φυσικού στρώματος για Τηλεπικοινωνιακά Συστήματα και ιδιαίτερα Ασύρματα και Δορυφορικά Συστήματα Επικοινωνιών. Το 2002 έγινε Senior Member του ΙΕΕΕ, ενώ το 1999 εκλέχθηκε Πρόεδρος του Ελληνικού Chapter του Communications Society του ΙΕΕΕ.
