RMIT University’s School of Computer Science and IT is offering full scholarships to high achieving international/domestic students towards PhD study in Melbourne, Australia. The school is internationally recognised for its research strength. It is ranked in the top eight Australian universities for Computer Science and Information Systems (according to QS World University Rankings).

The school currently has 4 PhD scholarships available for research in the following areas:

  • Mobile and pervasive computing, sensor networks: With recent advances in wireless sensing, smart devices, and social networks, computing is becoming more and more pervasive in our lives. In these emerging research fields, we are investigating new sensing models, novel communication techniques, and intelligent data analytics methods to improve human experience and quality of life for a variety of application domains such as smart building, smart city, healthcare, and elderly care. You are expected to conduct cutting edge research, and develop new theories, methodology and technologies to move a step forward towards this vision. In addition to RMIT’s PhD entry requirements, candidates should have a strong algorithm and theoretical background, and good implementation and programming skills. Previous research experience in one of the above areas with the evidence of peer-reviewed publications would be an advantage.
  • Data mining complex transactional and criminal networks: Money laundering, if undetected, poses a major concern for governments and communities. We aim to develop a software system platform for detecting money laundering networks that can assist intelligence data analysts to detect unknown money laundering networks efficiently and accurately, helping fight crimes more effectively. In addition to RMIT’s PhD entry requirements, candidates should have a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Computer Systems Engineering, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics and Statistics) with at least 2nd class upper honours or equivalent.  Experience in one of the areas of Data Mining, Network Security, Statistical Analysis and Stochastic Processes would be an advantage.  Please note that this project requires the student to be an Australian citizen.
  • Top-down and Bottom-up Service Design for Cloud: Any wide deployment of service oriented architecture (SOA) in enterprises and the web requires a congruent technology. Web services are by far the technology of choice. Web services act as building blocks for SOA. Those building blocks need to be designed in an efficient and effective manner to provide a competitive service. During this process, it is important to investigate the design issues related to granularity, abstraction, generality, etc. Similarly, it is also important to evaluate the functional, non-functional and behavioral properties of web services to produce an optimum design. Therefore, developing a rigorous foundation that would provide sound design is paramount. It will help to reduce the effort of integration, minimize the impact of change, deliver appropriate levels of granularity, abstraction and generality, etc. In addition to RMIT’s PhD entry requirements, candidates should have background in a Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Spatio-temporal data analytics: Proliferation of the Internet as primary medium for data publishing and information exchange leads to an explosion in the volumes of contents available online. In addition to professionally-produced material being offered free on the Internet, the public has also been allowed, indeed encouraged, making its content available online to everyone. User-generated geospatial content is commonly referred to as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). This research focuses on investigating models, algorithms and techniques that render VGI to useful, integratable and context-aware information.  In particular our research interest is on methods to integrate and advance current data modelling techniques, data mining algorithms, and context-aware middleware for crowdsourced VGI data.  In addition to RMIT’s PhD entry requirements, candidates should have background in a relevant discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Information Technology, Geomatics).  Experience in one of the areas of Data Mining, Data Integration, Social Network Analysis would be an advantage.

Eligibility: Applicants must have an honours/master degree in the area of Computer Science or related disciplines.

Remuneration: The PhD scholarships are approximately $25,000AUD per year (tax free) for 3 years with no extension. International candidates may be eligible for a tuition waiver.
