R&D Projects

R&D PROJECTS

  • T1RCI-593 MANTO (link)
The MANTO project aims at the development and validation of two state-of-the-art navigation applications for blinds and visually impaired. The first application (Blind RouteVision) addresses the autonomous safe pedestrian outdoor navigation of blinds and visually impaired. Building upon very precise positioning, it aims to provide an accessibility, independent living, digital escort and safe walking aid for blinds. The application will operate on Android and iOS smartphones exploiting Google Maps to implement a voice guided navigation service. The smartphone application will be supported by an external embedded device integrating a microcontroller, a high precision GPS receiver, a simple keypad to allow the blind to interact easily with the app to select routes and other functions, as well as a servo-motorized sonar sensor for real-time recognition and by-passing of obstacles along the route of the blind person. Additional application features will include a configurator to define a list of destinations than can be selected through the keypad, app synchronization with traffic lights, weather information to help dress appropriately, dialing and answering phone calls, emergency notification of carers about the current position of the blind person, and the exploitation of dynamic telematics information regarding public transportation timetables and bus stops for building composite routes which may include public transportation segments in addition to pedestrian segments.  Furthermore, Blind RouteVision comprises an innovative and challenging application component to provide real-time visual information to the blind person along the route exploiting machine- and deep-learning technology. The proposed application will go beyond the current state-of-the-art in worldwide blind navigation applications demonstrating unparalleled functionality and setting a precedent for its competitors.
The second application (Blind MuseumTourer) will enable blind and visually impaired persons to experience autonomous self-guided tours in Museums. Based on the outcome of the particular use case, the application will evolve long-term to an indoor blind navigation system for public buildings. The app will execute on Android and iOS smartphones to implement a voice-instructed self-guided navigation service inside Museum exhibition halls and ancillary spaces. The application will comprise an accurate indoor positioning system using a sophisticated dead reckoning mechanism, bluetooth proximity sensors at the exhibits and unobtrusive assistive tactile route indicators marked on the floor of Museum rooms (conforming to international standards for assistive tactile walking). Furthermore, the application will comprise an indoor positioning system for completely free movement inside internal spaces.
  • ESA SATWAYS (link)
The ESA SATWAYS project resolved the issue of communication loss during landing and take-off of VFR flights. This is done by maintaining radio contact via switching to the heliport local frequency which is relayed to the flight controller over satellite. The system was installed at the heliport of Patmos and HCAA headquarters. Regarding radio communications we managed to implement a TWR (tower) service in a centralized manner for all heliports. The developed system is actually an extension to the VFR procedure for the airspace above heliports. The SATWAYS system has been successfully used and evaluated not only during the control of VFR flights (i.e. helicopters which were the original target), but also for IFR flights, i.e. speedy airplanes rushing through the Greek skies through extremely dense regions of the airspace. Taking into consideration that, to the best of our knowledge, there exist no publications that present a similar system or a similar trial, this outcome is considered truly original.
During the evaluation phase, the SATWAYS system has been used numerous times for operational activities. The users rated the system with an average of 8.67 on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 is best) regarding voice quality and an average of 1.44-1.61 on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 is best) regarding the effect of delay on their perception, effectiveness, timing, correct phraseology and speech rate. The biggest reward was Report #18, within which the responsible controller wrote:
“This was a flight with destination the Patmos heliport. The frequency was checked upon departure from the heliport of Mykonos (translation note: another island about 45 miles West of Patmos) and throughout the flight until landing at the heliport of Patmos. At a distance of 15 nautical miles east of the RIPLI region (translation note: controller jargon for an area within the Greek airspace), the pilot reported a 5/5 radio communications quality and so did the flight controller. At 20 nautical miles west of Patmos and at a flight level of 1500 feet, both the pilot and controller reported a 5/5 quality. Beginning the descent to the Patmos heliport, both the transmission and reception were exceptional. On the ground, the communication quality was also exceptional and the flight plan has been closed using radio comms. The pilot has expressed to me his admiration, since traditionally this area had no radio coverage. I consider that the use of satellite communications is a success and covers our requirements for the heliport up to ground level”.

    • A highlighted research publication on E-model adaptation for satellite IP radio calls in Air Traffic Control in the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. This paper proposes several modifications to the E-model, a transmission planning computational tool, so as to allow for quantification of the quality of radio voice communications used in a variety of mission critical applications. This modified tool has been used for network planning and system design addressing the particular requirements of Air Traffic Control. The presented methodology can result in detailed modelling of the end-to-end voice path including radio communication components, so that system design is driven by QoS requirements and user acceptance is assured prior to any actual deployments. The approach has been applied on a Radio over IP over satellite communication solution (the SATWAYS system) designed and implemented to extend the coverage of radio frequencies within airspaces in cases where the commonly used landline communication infrastructure is either too costly or impossible to install and maintain. The paper provides evidence that the way to an all-IP ATC network is wide open.
    • A press release on the successful installation and operation of the system appeared on the ESA Telecom web news on 05 Nov 2008.
    • An international book edition summarizing the important SATWAYS results is under preparation, with a Greek version already available.
  • FP7 ICT FET ATRACO
The ATRACO EU FET project (http://www.uni-ulm.de/in/atraco/) presented a revolutionary approach towards the realization of next generation ambient intelligent environments. In this framework, the undersigned, leading a small research team, developed a framework for network adaptation in Intelligent Environments using OSGi and UPnP technology allowing the uniform and transparent access to devices and services present in the networked environment and supporting the realization of activity spheres across a mixture of heterogeneous networks. Our work specifically focuses on the issue of heterogeneity at the network level and defines adaptation as the systemic mechanism to deal with this issue. The proposed network adaptation framework supported an ambient ecology trial hosted in the iSpace in Essex demonstrating a number of futuristic user activity spheres.
Selected publications involving the undersigned include a chapter contribution on Adaptive Networking in an international book edition on “Next Generation Intelligent Environments: Ambient Adaptive Systems” (main author), an ATRACO research paper in the International Journal of Next Generation Computing (corresponding author), and 7 publications in praiseworthy international conferences.
  • EUROSTARS Z-PHONE
The Internet of Things is currently receiving much attention from both the research and business communities. Internet of Things research is exploring ways to connect constrained sensors (or “smart things”). During the past few years, this research has produced a number of low-power radio and network protocols. ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) is a wireless standards-based technology that enables broad-based deployment of complex wireless networks with low-cost, low-power solutions that run for years on inexpensive primary batteries. The maximum data rate of IEEE802.15.4 is 250 kb/s, which is low compared to other wireless technologies but, we have shown it is sufficient to transmit voice using narrowband voice codecs. We have evaluated and implemented a voice codec, on a highly constrained device, to transmit voice in full-duplex mode using ZigBee technology. In particular, we analysed all the factors used to select the most suitable codec from the wide selection of high quality low-bandwidth royalty-free codecs that are available in the open source community. We also elaborated on code implementation details and performance. We also provided highly informative and readily reusable lessons learned for any applications that require high-quality voice transmission over constrained networks and endpoint devices.
Selected publications include a highlighted publication in the IEEE Communication Magazine, D&I series, April 2012 issue, an overall project journal publication (Journal of Computer Networks and Communications) focusing also on embedded parallelism towards enabling Zigbee voice communications, and several IEEE conference publications. This effort has created interest to researchers of the Institute of Space Technologies at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
